Raja Rajeswari ’98 (b. 1972)
Born in Chennai, India, Rajeswari earned her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1998 and became a landmark figure in New York’s judiciary as the first Indian-born woman appointed to the New York City Criminal Court. Before her appointment in April 2015, she spent over sixteen years at the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office, rising to Deputy Bureau Chief in the Sex Crimes – Special Victims Bureau. At her swearing-in, she said of her appointment: “"It's like a dream. It's way beyond what I imagined… for someone like me, an immigrant who comes from India, I'm beyond grateful… this is not only my American Dream, but it shows another girl from a faraway country that this is possible.” Rajeswari also serves as Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Court Interpreting for the New York State Office of Court Administration, reflecting her commitment to language access and immigrant justice.
