Nelson S. Román ’89 (b. 1960)

Román was born and raised in the Bronx. He worked for the NYPD while attending Fordham University. He continued to work for the Police Department while taking night classes at Brooklyn Law School, graduating in 1989. Román immediately joined the Kings County District Attorney’s office as an ADA. He later served as a Special Narcotics Prosecutor in the New York County District Attorney’s office and clerked for Hon. Jose Padilla Jr., in the New York City Civil Court. Román then began his judicial career with an appointment to the Housing Court bench of Civil Court. He was elected to the State Supreme Court in 2002 and was appointed to the Appellate Division by Governor David Paterson. In 2013 Judge Román was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as a U.S. District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Judge Román has also served as president of the Puerto Rican Bar Association.
