Description

Frank X. Altimari ’51 (1928–1998)

Altimari earned his LL.B. from Brooklyn Law School in 1951 and became one of the most respected federal jurists to come out of the Eastern District bench. After beginning his career in private practice, he served as a Nassau County District Court judge, then as a New York State Supreme Court justice, before being appointed in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. In 1985 Reagan elevated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where he served until his death in 1998. Known for his careful approach to criminal law and sentencing, Altimari also chaired the New York State Commission of Investigation from 1971 to 1973, and the New York Times noted that he was regarded as “a tough, fair-minded trial judge” whose appellate opinions reflected deep respect for procedural integrity.
