Rafael Piñeiro ’80 (b. 1949)

Piñeiro, born in 1949, joined the New York City Police Department in 1970 and rose steadily through the ranks over a four-decade career. After earning his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, he held a series of leadership roles in the department, including Deputy Commissioner for Personnel and Chief of Personnel. In 2010 he was appointed First Deputy Commissioner, the second-highest position in the NYPD, becoming the highest-ranking Hispanic member of the department. He retired in 2014 after more than forty years of service. Reflecting on his own journey as an immigrant officer, Piñeiro said that his experience “lets me understand what people go through to get into this country.”
