E. Leo Milonas ’60 (1937–2024)
E. Leo Milonas, who graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1960, rose from Criminal Court judge to the Appellate Division and served as New York’s chief administrative judge. A staunch defender of judicial independence, he warned in a letter to Mayor Koch published in the New York Times, that “to condemn the courts for contributing to crime … undermines the integrity and independence of a court system which is the ultimate bulwark of a free government.” As president of the New York City Bar Association, he criticized anti-terrorism policies that endangered civil liberties and continued championing fair-trial rights throughout his career.
