John Carro ’56 (b. 1927)

John Carro, who received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956, became a pioneering figure in New York’s judiciary as the first Puerto Rican designated an Appellate Division Justice in the state. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, he served in the U.S. Navy before beginning a public-service career that included becoming the first Puerto Rican to serve as Assistant to Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Appointed to the Criminal Court in 1969, Carro later became an Acting Supreme Court Justice and was elected to the Supreme Court in 1977 before Governor Hugh L. Carey appointed him to the Appellate Division, First Department, in 1979, where he served until his retirement in 1994. Following his judicial career, he returned to private practice and founded Carro, Velez, Carro & Mitchell, later known as Carro, Carro & Mitchell.
