Himan Brown ‘31 (1910-2010)

Valedictorian of Brooklyn Law School’s Class of 1931, Himan Brown became one of the most influential figures in the history of American radio drama, creating and producing iconic series such as The Adventures of the Thin Man, Dick Tracy, Grand Central Station, Inner Sanctum Mysteries, and the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Described by The New York Times as “the patriarch of radio drama,” Brown produced or participated in more than 30,000 broadcasts over a career that spanned nearly the entire twentieth century, pioneering the use of sound effects and storytelling techniques that defined the golden age of radio. Although he never practiced law, his legal training proved useful in securing rights to major fictional characters, and he remained a supporter of Brooklyn Law School, later being named Alumni of the Year in 2004.
