Connie Mallafre Melendez '86
Melendez, a 1986 graduate of Brooklyn Law School, became the first Cuban American elected to the New York State Supreme Court, following a legal career that included service on the New York City Civil Court and the Brooklyn Criminal Court. After beginning her professional life as a social worker and later pursuing law to support victims of domestic violence and child abuse, she rose through the New York courts before being sworn in as a state Supreme Court justice in 2022. Recognized as a trailblazing figure within the judiciary and New York’s Hispanic legal community, she has been honored by bar associations and Brooklyn Law School for her public service and leadership.
